hike in bend oregon

I was in Salem, OR for the whole month of May and it was a wet one. Like it rained non-stop for weeks! And I never saw the sun. So, I searched for short hikes near Bend Oregon where I knew it was sunny! Bend, Oregon is about 2 ½ drive from Salem, OR and you have to through a mountain to get there. I was at my wit’s end with all the rain, so I packed up my little overnight bag and Tink for a hiking adventure in Bend Oregon.

The drive from Salem to Bend travels through the Cascades. Take time to enjoy the views driving through the Cascades. It was also rather heartbreaking to see the devastation from the fire of 2017 that was started by a boy playing with fireworks.

After we got through the Cascades pass, we made a stop in the small town of Three Sisters. Most of the shops were closed when we arrived in town, however, it was a cute little town to explore.

Where to stay near Bend OR

One of the really cool things about Oregon is they have ALL the topography. Shoreline, plains,  mountains, and the high desert, which is where Bend is located. I found a great little “lodge” outside of Bend The Lodge at Eagles Nest. It was perfect for Tink and me. It was not luxurious but very close to several short hikes near Bend and they were very dog friendly! If you only have 1 day to hike in Bend I have suggestions for a great day on the trails!

Steelhead Falls is about 2 miles long, so it makes for a perfect short hike near Bend, Oregon. If you’re feeling like a longer hike, you can add more miles. This trail is very popular with locals for fishing, swimming, and picnicking. It is also very popular with pups. It is a smooth trail and easy to follow. This trail is a great way to start your day in Bend Oregon.

Cline Falls is less than 2 miles. It is a super easy hike that begins in a pretty little park. It would be a great place to have a picnic. The trail follows a creek so it is easy to find the falls. The trail is also very close to the road so keep that in mind. The falls at the end are pretty special, so check out Cline Falls for an easy hike some falls!

Short Hikes in Smith Rock State Park

Smith Rock State Park was packed the day I visited. Apparently, there was a running race through the Canyon. We drove around all the parking lots several times before we found parking. Note there is a fee for parking with kiosks throughout the park to allow you to pay. I was almost turned off but I’m really glad we stayed to explore the Park (once we finally found parking). Check out the website for all the trails available based on difficulty.

I did the Canyon to Rim Loop and was able to walk along the creek most of the journey. This trail was not busy so Tink and I did not see many people and had beautiful views of the park. The whole park is just spectacular with amazing views. We spent most of the afternoon in Smith State Park enjoying gorgeous weather and really cool trails. There are some really steep climbs to get into the canyon and out again so keep that in mind as you visit Smith Rock State Park. I was glad I had my hiking poles with me.

Crooked River Trail is also in Smith Rock State Park. It is 2.5 miles and fairly easy. You can easily add this hike to Rim Loop while you’re in the Park.

Pilot Butte is only 1 ½ miles so it would be the perfect short hike to end your day in Bend, OR. The view from the summit of Pilot Butte is gorgeous and is a great place to watch the sunset as you wrap up your day of hiking near Bend, OR.
